MY TOP 10
Erta Ale (Ethiopia) : I went twice there : a spectacular sight at night ! This volcano has a permanent lava lake (volcanoes with a persistent lava lake are a very rare phenomenon).
Dallol (Ethiopia) : in the Danakil Depression, hottest place on earth, this place is unique for its landscape of green acid ponds, iron oxide, sulfur and salt desert plains.
Kilauea (Hawai) : fabulous place with its lava lake (in Halema' Uma crater, spectacular at night) and its lava flowing in the ocean (where I walked by night & which I saw also from boat).
Lengaï (Tanzania) : the sacred mountain of the Masaï ; unique for its very fluid & relatively cold lava ; lava which flows out of the crater looks like chocolate !.
Kawah Itjen (Indonesia) : an active volcano with a large acid lake and sulphur deposits where sulphur is extracted by locals.
Yasur (Vanuatu) : this volcano is erupting nearly continuously and can be approached quite safely (especially spectacular at night when volcanic bombs are ejected) !
Semeru (Indonesia) : an active volcano, erupting every half hour when I visited it, when I was living in Indonesia, right from the rim of the crater.
Galunggung (Indonesia) : saw from close its major eruption of June 1982, famous for the 2 planes which accidentally entered the ash cloud and had their 4 engines stopped.
Kilimandjaro (Tanzania) : a non active volcano, top of Africa, a wonderful climb and view over the savannah.
Mont Blanc (France) : highest summit in Europe (except Caucasus).
